“taking on the color of procession”

by Jack C. Buck

the land slopes the light runs

filling us below we shallow the sun

faces upward mouths open to the sky

rain comes drink up

you’re a pond

scoop up some dirt

hold it in your mouth

a flower sprouts

quickly, the sun is going

behind the mountains

night comes

a fire is built

the hills beyond

awake the next morning

to the sound

Jack C. Buck lives in Boise, Idaho. He is the author of the collections Deer Michigan and Gathering View, along with the chapbook will you let it send you out.
